This project is located in Yilan, in the midst of rice paddies, with its stern architectural exterior reflecting a sense of respect towards the land and environment. As the concealing black being the most humble gesture towards nature, a black barn in the Yilan prairie has its own intimate dialogue with the mountains and fields; being low-profile yet visible is of its naturalistic purity, with nostalgia of true meaning of life. The owners are 3 brothers and sisters in the fashion business who hope to utilize the farmland in their hometown, while condensing their perspective life experiences in this collaborative business venture of a coffee-themed Bed & Breakfast, and sharing their mindset of quality of life.
This is a three-story building with consistent planning throughout the entire building and its interior, following along the beautiful landscape contour and site condition so as to define the orientation and elevation design of the building, hence echoing the design principle of “Form Follows Function”.
Through the simple black volume of a distinctive landmark, its geometric exterior and irregular-shaped window-opening indicating the rich possibility of the interior, triggering much imagination and incentives for further exploration; the special window openings also frame the best view of the landscape with the changing of seasons.
